OCR confidence rating

What the extract confidence percentage means, how fields are scored, and what to do when a scan lands below 90%.

What the percentage is

Extract confidence is Paycheck's composite score for how readable the check image was and how well key fields agree with each other. It is not a bank settlement guarantee, a fraud score, or a promise that funds will clear.

The score is weighted toward settlement-critical fields: courtesy amount, ABA routing number, account digits, written legal amount, payee, check number, and date. Engine confidence from each OCR pass can add a small boost, but the score never claims 100% certainty from client-side OCR alone.

Important

OCR creates data. Money exists only after partner clearance and settlement conditions are met. See Clearance & payouts and Disclosures.

Rating bands

  • 92% and above: Amount and MICR look cross-checked. Eligible for the automatic deposit path when other gates pass.
  • 75% to 91%: Usable, but you should review and edit fields before continuing. Manual review may still be required under 90%.
  • Under 75%: Image is likely soft, glare-heavy, or cropped. Retake the front for a sharper capture.
  • Under 90%: Automatic high-confidence deposit is blocked. You can request paid manual review instead.

The 90% threshold is the product gate between automatic deposit and the paid manual review path. Field-level percentages (amount, routing, date, and so on) show which parts of the read are strong or weak.

How fields are scored

  • Amount rises when the courtesy box and written legal line agree within a few cents.
  • Routing rises when the MICR ABA number passes the standard checksum.
  • Account and check number scores reflect MICR structure and digit length.
  • Date, payee, payer, and bank drop when OCR marks them unreadable or missing.
  • Endorsement reflects whether the back image shows a deposit / endorsement signal.

You can edit amount, payee, payer, bank, date, and memo before continuing. Edits help the review queue, but they do not by themselves raise the locked extract confidence from the original OCR pass.

If confidence is below 90%

  • Rescan with better light, flatter paper, and the full check in frame.
  • Or request manual review: choose your bank, confirm photos, then pay the flat SOL fee shown in-app.
  • Manual review is not stacked with the ~2% automatic deposit fee schedule.

Tips for a higher score

  • Use a dark, non-reflective background and avoid overhead glare on the amount box.
  • Fill the frame: all four corners visible, MICR line sharp at the bottom.
  • Capture front first, then the endorsed back for mobile deposit wording if required.
  • Hold steady until amount, MICR, and legal-line locks light up in the camera coach.
